ADVICE aims at increasing the numbers of HEVs and P-HEVs up to 10% of all vehicles registered in the mid-term range. This will be achieved by focusing on a market segment called "premium class", which covers medium class, upper-medium class up to luxury vehicles and SUVs. This segment is facing severe problems in reaching European environmental exhaust targets when running on fossil fuel only, not the least due to the considerable vehicle weight.
In ADVICE three physical demonstrator vehicles are built, ranging from mild-hybrid, plug-in-hybrid to full-hybrid and – concerning fuel type – from gasoline to diesel-driven. In addition, it will be shown that the whole range between these demonstrator vehicles can be well covered by means of validated simulation, yielding a complete coverage of the whole “premium class” segment.
Besides fulfilling the energy efficiency and emission requirements of the call and limiting premium cost to 5% with respect to the best in-class non-hybrid diesel (and 15% premium for a P-HEV), particular attention is devoted to optimum drivability and drive performance, which are essential when purchasing a “premium class” vehicle and thus crucial to achieving the market penetration aimed at.
In addition hybrid energy storage systems (a combination of differently sized electrochemical systems or mixed electrochemical and mechanical systems) will be used to demonstrate both energy efficiency and cost reduction.
The ADVICE consortium brings together 22 participants from the whole vehicle value chain to meet these ambitious technical challenges in order to sustainably impact the market penetration of HEV and P-HEV in the European and global market.
OBJECTIVES:
The general objective of the ADVICE project is to significantly reduce the costs and complexity of hybrid architectures for light-duty premium platforms in order to increase the market penetration of HEVs and P-HEVs and to foster the competitiveness of the European automotive industry. This will be achieved by truly new and innovative development steps and technologies to provide an innovative lighter hybrid powertrain with a focus on pure and plug-in hybrid vehicles at competitive cost.
Hybrid passenger cars are already in production, but their market penetration is still relatively low and limited to certain vehicle classes. The major hurdle today for end users is the significant cost premium over cars with conventional powertrain. The ADVICE project aims for an improvement of vehicle performance with respect to gradeability, drive-off performance and acceleration quantified through a proper performance index with 10% reduction and the objective assessment of driveability.
